Lafayette, Louisiana native Gene Regan, owner of Mercedes Specialist of Oxford, has always had a passion for Mercedes vehicles. He began working on cars over 30 years ago as a part time job while attending University of Southwest Louisiana. Then he moved to North Carolina and secured a job with a Mercedes dealership.

After leaving N.C., Regan made his way to Oxford and opened his specialty repair shop in 1991, which was originally named Oxford Import Service.

“At the time, there weren’t enough Mercedes to work on in this area to keep me busy full time,” Regan said. “By 1998, I switched to working on Mercedes 100 percent, which is what I was originally trained to do.”

Even though he started his Mercedes training in the 1980’s, Regan still attends seminars for to continue his education so that he can stay up to date on any new technology or problems that may have come up with Mercedes. In his shop, he uses the latest technology and software, the same that Mercedes dealerships use.

All these factors offer a huge convenience for Mercedes owners in Oxford. It keeps owners from traveling to Memphis or Jackson to have their cars checked and keeps Oxford dollars in the local economy. Plus Regan is the only man working at the shop, so he is able to add a personal touch to the vehicles and customer service.

“The fact that I am here local, people can drop their car off and they’re only dealing with me,” Regan said. “If you’re driving to Memphis, it takes over an hour to get there and if you have an appointment you’re going to be there all day. And if you have to leave the car, you have to take another whole day to go back up there to get it. I’m the one working on a car when it comes in. When you go to a dealership you’re not talking to the mechanic that’s working on your car. When you come here, I am the one doing the work and I will talk with you to see what the problem is.”

Many well-known residents have used Regan’s shop to repair their vehicles in the past. He is very thorough in all of the work he does and, because of that, he is more likely to catch problems that bigger dealerships could miss. He also documents any work done on the vehicles brought to his shop. It helps him stay organized and lets the customer know what exactly was done to their car.

While walking around his shop and standing under a customers car to change the oil, Regan talks about how engines have changed over time since he started working on Mercedes. The man has a passion for the Mercedes product and is anxious to learn more and do more work. It’s easy to see why many owners take their cars to Regan, Oxford’s Mercedes specialist.
