Masik Collegiate Fragrances created a signature scent that invokes the essence of Ole Miss: “The unrivaled elegance of the Grove, the fervor of the Rebels and the endless obsession of Red and Blue.” The University of Mississippi signature scents are expressed in cologne, perfume and car freshener.
Masik Collegiate Fragrances is founded by Katie Masik, a chemical engineering graduate from Bucknell University. She wrote of her journey to creating a more personable fragrance line on her website. Her fascination by the scientific link between scents and memories led to her creating collegiate fragrance lines to capture the spirit of the beloved universities. There are currently 20 universities featured of which half are in the SEC: University of Alabama, University of Arkansas, Auburn University, University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee, Texas A&M, and University of Mississippi.

The Ole Miss fragrances were inspired by the school colors — red and blue — so her company used red and blue aromatics such as raspberries and blueberries. Oak tree and magnolia were used as Grove-inspired scents.
Masik said, “Ole Miss is such a beautiful campus with Southern charm so we also took inspiration from the style of the Lyceum!”
Masik Collegiate Fragrances held smell sessions at University of Mississippi where students and faculty smelled various fragrance formulation options (aka “fragrance briefs”) created for the university. Masik said the winning scents became the official men’s and women’s fragrances.
Women’s fragrance has three diverse notes. The head notes are sparkling bergamot, lemon zest and ruby raspberry which all rise to the nose immediately after application. Then the heart notes of black currant, crushed tonka beans and sweet blueberry rise gently to the nose. After a period of wear as the perfume dries down the base notes of amber woods, patchouli and sandalwood and lastly vanilla for “the sweet Southern charm.”
Men’s fragrance notes are a little similar to women’s fragrance but they differ. The head notes are sparkling bergamot oil, fresh mandarin oil and marine accord. The heart notes are white cyclamen, sea salt accord and fresh blue rosemary. The base notes are crisp muguet, aromatic fir balsam and white cedar and tree moss. The fir scent is strong and long-lasting.
The fragrances cost $39.50 each for 1.7 oz (50 mL) bottle. They can be purchased online and at Belk.
Masik announced the company recently launched Ole Miss wooden air freshener shaped like a football and scented with the men’s sport fragrance. These are sold at $4.99 and Masik says they make “great stocking stuffers!”
She said, “The hope is that these original scents will remind people of the past – long after the days on campus come to an end.”
