The weekly 10s of Oxford recognizes all the great people in Oxford and at University of Mississippi in their contribution to society. With the wedding season upon us we can’t help but feel excited to feature these people who can help make anyone’s wedding wonderful.

Valeda Carmichael

A long time lover of food and arts, Carmichael made her dreams a reality 12 years ago when she opened Culin-Arts in West Point. Last fall she moved the store to 404 S. 11th Street on the Square area in Oxford.

Culin-Arts has a vast inventory of kitchen equipment, paintings and home decor.

One of great features of her business is wedding registry. Carmichael sets up tables for each couple in the store and places all of their registrations on display for other couples to see and weigh their registration options in the store.

Her way of registry allows customers an opportunity to see quality of their purchases. Once an item is out of stock it is completely off the table. No duplicates are made which leaves many items one-of-a-kind choices.

“The bridal registry was a big part of my business there [in West Point], so I’m hoping it is going to be a big success for me here in Oxford as well. Aside from the functional and pretty items in the store, I’ve had a lot of families buy paintings, for example, as they are kind of ‘forever gifts’, which is really cool,” Carmichael said.

Taylor Shaffett opened Butter and Bread Co. on N. 13th Street on the Square last fall while still enrolled in classes at University of Mississippi. This store was her lifelong dream that she worked hard to bring unique kitchen and home decor to Oxford.

“Owning my own store is my dream but I feel like owning a kitchen accessory and home decor store is literally in my blood,” Shaffert said.

She hand-selected every merchandise that is featured in the store, including the Smeg refrigerator line that is available only at Butter and Bread in all of Mississippi. Shaffert also has bridal registry available and will help the couple make their home warm and one of a kind.
