Burton sells thousands of pounds of crawfish from January through late July, but come August, the crawfish season is over.

“We are gearing up to sell fresh Mississipi Gulf Coast shrimp for retail sales, catering and tailgating in The Grove,” said Burton, a the Tutwiler, Mississippi, native.

Burton, who purchased Dixie Crawfish from Brand and Clint Peterman of Oxford, has been in the crawfish business for five years.

“We do 90-95 percent of the fraternity and sororities on campus with mobile units and have good sales from our location on North Lamar,” Burton said.

Dixie has five trailers selling crawfish, one located full time in Tupelo.

“We do business all over North Mississippi and have even catered parties as far away as Nashville, Burton said. “The crawfish season is generally from the first of January to late July or early August, so we will switch over to fresh shrimp for the first game.”

Dixie Crawfish does a lot of catering around town.

“We brought home to Oxford our Tupelo trailer until next year and are getting ready for a good season of tailgating and local retail sells,” he added.

Burton said the price of crawfish varies, depending on the season.

“For catering, where thousands of pounds of crawfish might be involved, the price is about $3 a pound. On-site sales of say five pounds will be in the range of $6.50 early in the season to as low as $4.50 late in the season, Burton said.
