Trip Dabney, nominated as hottytoddy.com’s first star student, is on his way to a flourishing medical career.
Dabney is a freshman at Northwest Mississippi Community College, currently enrolled in the paramedic program. At 18 years old he graduated from Oxford High School early and has an eagerness to start studying emergency medicine.
“I really like helping people. I wanted to do the paramedic program before I go to medical school to get experience, and what I really like about emergency medicine is that it requires you to think on your feet in a very fast-paced environment,” Dabney said.
After he finishes the program at Northwest, Dabney plans to attend Ole Miss and major in applied sciences. He volunteers at a clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays to practice skills such as reading vital signs and drawing blood, and he also volunteers in the ER as well.
An active Boy Scout, he learned a lot about first aid training in the scouts program. Dabney started out at the age of 10 learning basic CPR, and later worked as a lifeguard. At 13 he got his wilderness first responder badge.
He is now an Eagle Scout with Palms (the highest honor you can get in the organization.) Only three percent of the population make it through the eight year process it takes to become an Eagle Scout.
A defining moment for Dabney was when he was on a Boy Scout camping trip and a younger scout fell off a cliff and broke his leg (compound fracture.) “No one knew what to do- I stepped up and we formed a human stretcher and carried him eight hours out of the woods. I kind of became the ‘scout medic’ after that.”
In his spare time, Dabney likes to rock climb, target practice, camp and hike. He is a member of the Baptist Student Union at Ole Miss. He also helps elderly members of an Episcopal church clear their yards during the season changes.
Lately he has been working for a tent company and enjoys setting up tents before home games for customers in the Grove. He also has parked cars for the past two years in the Hottytoddy.com parking lot.
“I’m like every other college student. I enjoy the college life and I like to rush the Grove on Friday nights with all the other Ole Miss students.”
