The Ole Miss athletic department along with the university libraries and liberal arts department will be hosting a panel discussion on Oct. 14 based on the university’s common reading, The Education of a Lifetime by Dr. Robert Khayat. The panel will be held at the Grill at 1810 on Wednesday Oct. 14 from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. and will focus on a day in the life of a student-athlete. The event is open to the public.

Ole Miss student-athletes, Mike Hilton (football), Matt Denny (baseball), Scarlett Fox (Cross Country) and Shannon Ray(Track and Field) will be on the panel and will share their experiences balancing academic, team and social commitments. Ole Miss senior associate athletic director of student-athlete development, Derek Cowherd will serve as moderator.

Cowherd believes the panel will give students, faculty and staff a unique look into what a student-athletes life looks like and will also serve as a fitting way to celebrate Dr. Khayat’s legacy of service to both the academic and athletic side of the University of Mississippi.

“When we were approached to join in the Library’s and Liberal Arts’ event to highlight the University’s common reading “The Education of a Lifetime”, I could not think of a more fitting way to celebrate the legacy of Chancellor Khayat and his contributions to the University of Mississippi,” said Cowherd. A Day in the Life of a Student-Athlete” will be a great look behind the scenes of what student-athletes go through in a typical semester.”

Executive associate athletic director, Lynnette Johnson believes that this panel discussion will serve to bring the campus together.

“The core of the “common reading” is to bring our campus together for discussions like these. It is great to be able to discuss specifically our campus as we read Chancellor Khayat’s book,” said Johnson. “Our student-athletes and the former Chancellor have many common experiences as Dr. Khayat, was also a student athlete when he was a student at Ole Miss.”
