After collecting 473 pairs of shoes for Guatemala children, earning 48 Merit Badges, George Franklin Moak became’s Oxford’s newest Eagle Scout following ceremonies at First Presbyterian Church Sunday.

The son of Andrew and Lydia Moak, George is a 17 year old junior at Oxford High School. The rank of Eagle is Scouting’s highest award and is earned by only two percent of Scouts.

George has been an active member of Troop 45, sponsored by First Presbyterian Church, serving as Quartermaster and Patrol Leader. He is a member of the Brotherhood of the Order of The Arrow, Chicksa Lodge, and in 2013 he received the World Conservation Special Award. Recently he served on the staff of Camp Yocona, the Boy Scout camp operated by the Yocona Area Council which represents Northeast Mississippi.

For his Eagle Service Project, George spearheaded a shoe collections drive for Pur(SHOE)ing Joy, an organization founded in 2013 by the University of Mississippi graduates Shelby Ausband and Ty New.

George’s goal was to collect as many shoes and donations as possible to be given to children in Guatemala. Children in that country are not allowed to attend school without proper shoes. With the assistance of other members of Troop 45, George collected 473 pairs of shoes that were sent to Guatemala.

George is a second generation Eagle Scout, proudly joining his father who was also an Eagle Scout member of Troop 45. The Moak family has a linage of 10 Eagle Scouts.
