This morning, The Today Show featured Richard F. “Dickie” Scruggs for his new program: Second Chance Mississippi.

Scruggs said, “Raising awareness and funds for adult basic education in Mississippi is my number one focus. I am grateful to Tom Brokaw, his team and The Today Show for helping us spread our message of hope…giving others a second chance they deserve.”

Second Chance Mississippi is a nonprofit program that helps adults earn their GED and certifications to better their chances of employment.

Scruggs tutored fellow inmates while he served six years in prison. Since then, he created the program to help many more adults who do not have a high school diploma.

Many renowned Mississippians have joined Scruggs in his mission: Former UM Chancellor Dr. Robert Khayat, Archie Manning, Tom Burham, former Mississippi superintendent of Education and former dean of the University of Mississippi School of Education, and Dr. Andrew Mullins, Jr., UM professor, special assistant to UM Chancellors and state education chiefs to name a few of the numerous advisors.

Archie Manning said, “”Second Chance Mississippi is raising awareness and funds for adult education programs to help others lift themselves up out of poverty. Helping our fellow Mississippians get their GED and skill certification so that they can earn a family-sustaining wage will not only better their lives, but their community and our state as a whole. It’s a win-win for us all.”

Reverend Christopher Diggs has GED instruction in his church, Burns United Methodist. He said, “God has truly blessed us with the opportunity of helping others help themselves through our GED program. Working in collaboration with Second Chance Mississippi has given us the tools and resources needed we otherwise would not have.”
