There are power rankings, then there are fan base rankings such as best tailgating, campus beauty…and grammar.
Grammarly, an online proofreading app, ranked the Associated Press’ Top 25 football teams’ fan bases by analyzing 100 comments made by fans on the SB Nation blogs. Ole Miss ranked fourth with 2.01 mistakes per 100 words, just three spots behind Auburn fans who made 0.89 mistakes per. Alabama came in last with 6.40 mistakes.
Grammarly explains its methodology on its blog. It took the first five comments posted under each article on SB Nation’s official college football team blogs to a total of 100 comments per team. All comments contained at least 50 words.
Grammarly counted misspellings, wrong and missing punctuations, misused or missing words and subject-verb disagreement. It overlooked stylistic wording such as slang, serial comma usage and using numerals instead of spelled-out numbers.
Grammarly calculated the number of mistakes by dividing the total word count of comments by the total number of mistakes for each college football team fan base.
Keep in mind that the app calculated the grammar in football fans’ online comments, thus its rankings bear little to no correlation to University of Mississippi’s, or any other of the top 25 universities, quality of education.
