Ole Miss fraternity, sorority team up for event to help those in need

Ole Miss fraternity BYX (Beta Upsilon Chi) and social sorority Pi Beta Phi joined forces on Tuesday evening to host StarBYX, a fundraising event that raised nearly $3,000 for their philanthropies and the Christian Relief Fund.

Held at the Alpha Omega Christian Student Center, StarBYX included hot drinks, donuts and live music for a $5 donation to the cause.

“StarBYX was a huge success for all those involved. We had more people there than I would have imagined,” said Ole Miss sophomore David May, vice president of the Christian Fraternity Beta Upsilon Chi.

Ten percent of the proceeds will go to the Christian Relief fund –– a non-profit relief organization that sponsors programs that provide food, clean water, education, spiritual training, healthcare, and disaster relief to rescue orphans and children of poverty.

The rest of the proceeds will be divided equally. Half of the money will go to BYX’s philanthropy of choice, Oxford Medical Ministries, which provides health services to those less fortunate in the Oxford area.

The other half will be donated to Pi Phi’s national literacy platform, which focuses on literacy initiatives and the group’s literacy vision for the next 100 years.

“It was great to be able to help those in need by raising money (and awareness) for some great philanthropies,” said May. “We are excited and look forward to doing it again next year.”
