Estelle Oldham as she appeared in the 1913 Ole Miss annual. In high school Billy Falkner fell in love with Estelle, whose family had moved to Oxford in 1903.

In 1918 when Estelle began wearing William’s school ring, her parents, Judge and Mrs. Lem Oldham, expressed disapproval of him because of his desire to become a writer rather than pursue a more conventional career. Eleven years later, however, they acquiesced to the idea of their daughter marrying Mr. Faulkner. On June 20, 1929, William Faulkner & Estelle Oldham were married in the Presbyterian Church at College Hill, four miles northwest of Oxford.
