As the movie “Black Panther” continues to dominate the box office, a University of Mississippi graduate who wrote a Marvel companion novel will be on campus to talk about all things Wakanda.

Jesse Holland Jr. will speaking at Overby Auditorium at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27.  The event is open to the public.

The Holly Springs native graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1992 where he served as the editor of The Daily Mississippian. He has since become an award-winning writer who works for The Associated Press and he penned “Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther?”

Holland will also be the keynote speaker for the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association’s (MSPA) 2018 spring convention on Tuesday. Each year, the event draws more than 500 students, who come to Ole Miss for a day to strengthen their journalism skills and take what they’ve learned back to their school newsrooms and yearbook staffs.

“Jesse is a guy, who not too long ago was sitting right where these students are, and now he’s a part of something big,” MSPA Director and UM Journalism faculty member R.J. Morgan told Ole Miss News. “He’s someone with a broad range of skills who has honed his craft and found a sweet spot.”

Holland’s non-fiction book “The Invisibles: The Untold Story of African American Slavery in the White House” won the silver medal in U.S. History at the Independent Publisher Book Awards last year, Ole Miss News reports.
