Former Rebels’ QB posts jab at former coach Hugh Freeze

Apparently not all of former Ole Miss coach’s players were buying what he was preaching during tenure in Oxford.

OXFORD, Miss. — When some coaches hit the lowest point in their careers people often come out of the woodwork with dramatic news via social media.

It’s not usually good, either.

That was never truer than when former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze was called out by former Rebels’ quarterback Bo Wallace for Freeze’s treatment of quarterbacks after Auburn’s 24-14 loss to Arkansas.

“I know that there’s people open and I know that we’re running the football,” Freeze said after the loss to Arkansas. “We’ve got to find a guy that won’t throw it to the other team and we’ve got to find running backs that hold onto [the ball]. The scheme is what most everybody in the country is running, some sort of. But you’ve got to have a good quarterback in whatever system you’re going to choose.”

Quarterbacks Payton Thorne and Hank Brown combined for four of Auburn’s five turnovers Saturday, Wallace had enough that he took to his X account to post about his former coach.

“We’re approaching the point that he’s thrown so many QBs under the bus, that maybe no one wants to play for him??” Wallace wrote. “His offense helped me tremendously put numbers up when I blew my shoulder out…. But why is it someone else’s fault every time there’s a loss but when there’s a win I watch the press conferences just to count how many times the word “I” is used. [I] appreciate what he did for me, my son wouldn’t be playing for him though.”

Wallace came to Ole Miss by way of East Mississippi Community College after starting his college football career at Arkansas State under Steve Roberts. He signed with the Rebels as a 4-star JUCO prospect and No. 1 dual threat quarterback overall. The 6-foot-5 passer started 39 consecutive games under Freeze’s guidance and accounted for 9,534 yards, 62 touchdowns and 41 interceptions.

“Simply asking why Hugh can’t ever take responsibility,” Wallace added later. “[Freeze] caused the whole Auburn fan base to riot… can you say PANIC BUTTON.”

“But that dude has never helped me a day in his life,” he wrote. “It was always only about getting a win for him so he could collect his extra 100 racks a win. If y’all knew the medications and shots I was taking to get that man his money you wouldn’t believe they would let you walk on a field like that.”

The first four years of Freeze’s tenure at Ole Miss were continually better with each season going from seven wins in 2012, eight in 2013, nine in 2014 and punctuated with 10 victories in 2025. Wallace helped the Rebels defeat Alabama in a thrilling win at home.

“I probably will be too,” Wallace replied to a follower. “I won’t notice though … all the guy did was break my body in half and I played every game getting a numbing shot just to go get him his money… Then I graduate and can’t do anything to benefit him… and he hasn’t helped me ONE TIME!!! That’s the truth about who Hugh Freeze is.”

A second run in the SEC hasn’t been so good to Freeze as he sits 8-9 overall and just 3-6 in SEC play. His time in Oxford was met with negative national attention after he was forced to resign amid “a pattern of personal misconduct” less than two months before the 2017 season began.

Some Auburn fans questioned whether the Tigers’ staff members actually had Wallace’s number. Those are the ones that obviously didn’t do some basic research with logic.

It’s probably a good thing no reunions are being planned at this time we are aware of. Apparently all isn’t the greatest in the world.
