Ole Miss defense finds its missing havoc in Vanderbilt rout

A little more than a week ago, there was a legitimate question surrounding the Ole Miss defense.

Where had all the havoc gone?

This was a defense coordinated by Pete Golding, who just two seasons earlier directed a unit that led the nation with 52 sacks and 120 tackles for loss.

Disrupting opposing offenses wasn’t simply something Ole Miss did occasionally. It had become the foundation of its defensive identity.

But through four games this season, the Rebels had recorded just 23 TFLs, four sacks, two interceptions and no fumble recoveries. Opponents were finding ways to sustain drives, avoid negative plays and keep Ole Miss defenders on the field.

Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Blake Purchase provided a rather emphatic answer to that question.

The transfer from Oregon finished with five tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble in the Rebels’ 52-17 demolition of Vanderbilt.

And perhaps more importantly, Purchase’s biggest play directly resulted in seven points.

With Vanderbilt facing third-and-13 at its own 13-yard line late in the second quarter, Purchase broke through the Commodores’ protection and sacked quarterback Jared Curtis.

But Purchase wasn’t satisfied with simply bringing Curtis to the ground near the Commodores’ goal line. He knocked the football loose, allowing linebacker Suntarine Perkins to recover it and dive five yards for a touchdown.

Just like that, Ole Miss had extended its lead to 35-3 with 43 seconds remaining before halftime.

It was precisely the kind of game-changing defensive play the Rebels hadn’t been producing consistently during the first month of the season. Ole Miss scored 14 points in 20 seconds, with Purchase’s strip-sack setting off the sequence that turned a 28-3 lead into a 42-3 halftime rout.

And Purchase wasn’t alone.

Ole Miss finished Saturday with eight tackles for loss covering 41 yards, three sacks for 20 yards, two interceptions, seven pass breakups and four quarterback hurries.

The Rebels forced three turnovers, converting those takeaways into 17 points.

For perspective, Ole Miss had managed just four sacks in its first four games. Against Vanderbilt, the Rebels nearly matched that production in a single afternoon.

It wasn’t simply a matter of generating a few additional sacks, either.

The Rebels consistently disrupted Vanderbilt’s rushing attack, limiting the Commodores to 103 yards on 37 attempts, an average of just 2.8 yards per carry.

That was particularly significant following the defensive problems exposed during Ole Miss’ loss to Florida two weeks earlier.

The Gators had rushed for 302 yards, exposing issues with tackling, leverage and physicality that Golding spent the bye week trying to correct.

Against Vanderbilt, the Rebels looked much more like the physical, aggressive defense Golding expects.

Purchase was the most visible example, but the disruption came from several different places.

Perkins contributed a sack, a quarterback hurry and the fumble recovery for a touchdown. Antonio Kite and Nick Cull intercepted passes, while freshman Landon Barnes recorded two quarterback hurries.

Sharif Denson and Luke Ferrelli led the team with seven tackles apiece, and Jaylon Braxton added six.

That collective effort mattered because one of the concerns surrounding Ole Miss’ defense had been its inability to consistently force opposing offenses into uncomfortable situations.

When offenses can run the ball effectively, avoid negative plays and stay ahead of the chains, the pass rush has fewer opportunities to dictate what happens next.

Saturday, Vanderbilt struggled to establish that kind of offensive rhythm.

The next question is whether Ole Miss can keep doing it.
