Magnolia Flower

Mississippi is known as the Magnolia State.  The species is named for French botanist, Pierre Magnol.  The Magnolia is an ancient species– 20 million year-old fossils have been discovered.  They’re durable, too.  President Andrew Jackson transplanted a magnolia on the White House grounds in honor of his wife.  It is still thriving.
