Oxford’s Belk department store opened its doors this morning by hosting gift card giveaways, live music and refreshments for the Oxford community. Belk department stores around the country are celebrating 125 years of business all day Wednesday, May 29.

“One hundred twenty five years ago on May 29, the Belk brother opened the first Belk store,” said Julie Matlock, Belk’s store manager here in Oxford.  “Today marks one hundred twenty five years of success as a privately owned company.”

Belk customers are invited to join the Belk celebration party, featuring music by Silas Reed ‘N’ Da Books and Q93.7. The first 100 attendees were given complimentary breakfast treats, refreshments and Belk gift cards.

“We’re giving away one hundred gift cards this morning, and we’ll be celebrating all day with the Silas Reed ‘N’ Da Books band and Q93.7,” said Matlock. “The gift card giveaways range anywhere from $5 to $1,000.”

The Belk celebrations efforts are to thank the customers that have made their success possible throughout the years.

“Today we’re celebrating with our community, because we like to give back, and have fun,” said Matlock. “Today is our fun day!”
