Women’s Golf Heads to North Carolina For Tar Heel Invitational
Rebels Continue Fall Action This Weekend
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women’s golf team continues their fall season this weekend with the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina at UNC’s Finley Golf Course.
The tournament will run Friday, Oct. 11 to Sunday Oct. 13 and features an 18 team field including 12 in the top-25. Joining Ole Miss will be: No. 2 Alabama, No. 8 Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, No. 11 Clemson, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Florida, LSU, No. 20 Michigan State, No. 15 North Carolina, No. 14 NC State, Notre Dame, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 24 South Carolina, No. 19 Vanderbilt, No. 16 Virginia and Wake Forest.
The field contains five teams ranked in the latest top-10 of the Golf World/WGCA Coach’s Polls (Sept. 30) including 2012 national champion, Alabama and No. 3 Duke and No. 4 Oklahoma.
“We are at the midpoint of the fall season and Coach Howland and I have concentrated our time on evaluating where we are and where we need to get to in our practice sessions,” said head coach Michele Drinkard. “It’s all about improvement and staying on task with what each player needs to be successful on the course. “
Ole Miss participated in last season’s Tar Heel Invitational and turned in a second-place performance, behind host North Carolina. Junior Taelor Rubin set a career-low score 54 score on the course with a 221, while also setting a career-best finish with a 15th place showing.
“I am looking forward to seeing how we are improving over the weekend,” said Drinkard. “We are expecting some weather (mainly rain) the next couple of days so the players will need to adapt and create a game plan for a wet course.”
The Tar Heel Invitational is also a chance for Rubin to play in front of friends and family. Rubin hails from nearby Raleigh, N.C. Joining Rubin at the tournament are Alison Hovatter, Abby Newton, Stani Schiavone and Maria Toennessen.
The three-day tournament will consist of 54 holes, with 18 played each day on the 6,285-yard course.
Tee times will begin at 9:09 a.m. off of hole No. 1, and at 8:51 a.m. off hole No. 10 on Friday and Saturday, with Sunday being a shotgun start beginning at approximately 9:15 a.m.
