UM Women’s Golf Closes Action At Tar Heel Invitational
Hovatter and Newton set 54-hole lows
Sophomore Alison Hovatter closed out action at the Tar Heel Invitational by firing an even par 72 to close the three-day tournament with a score 216, setting a new 54-hole career low. The 216 bests Hovatter’s previous low of 226 set at the Cougar Classic earlier this fall.
Abby Newton fired a final round of 2-over par 74, for a three-day total of 217, also a new 54-hole career low. Her previous low was 220 set at Ole Miss’ M&F Bank Rebel Intercollegiate last season. Newton played well on the front nine, shooting par before the turn.
The Ole Miss squad shot a 305 in the final round of action for an overall score of 890 (292-293-305) and a 13th-place finish. The score of 890 is the Rebels best score this fall. On the afternoon, Ole Miss recorded six birdies and was just 3-over on the back nine.
Duke took home the title with a 7-over par 857 and was the lone team in the field to score under par. Clemson’s Ashlan Ramsey took home medalist honors with a three-day score of 207 and was 9-under par for the tournament.
Juniors Taelor Rubin and Stani Schiavone closed with rounds of 6-over par 78 and 9-over par 81, respectively. Maria Toennessen was also fired a 9-over par 81 to close tournament action.
Ole Miss is back on the course Oct. 25-27 at the prestigious Landfall Traditional hosted by UNC-Wilmington. This will be the Rebel’s second consecutive trip to the tournament. Last season, the final round was rained out due to Hurricane Sandy.
