Freshman Sean Tobin, running his first mile as an Ole Miss Rebel, became the first person in school history to break four minutes with his time of 3:59.91 that won the men’s late division race at the Husky Classic on Saturday.
In addition to breaking the school record, Tobin’s 3:59.91 mile ranks him top 25 in the NCAA this year. It was the second college race for the Clonmel, Ireland native, who also helped Ole Miss to a school record in the distance medley relay at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York a week earlier.
“I’m proud of Sean,” head coach Brian O’Neal said. “To break four minutes and set a lifetime personal best in his first mile with us, I’m excited for what the future holds for him and our whole team. Our men’s team is rounding into form at the right time.”
Also at the Husky Classic, freshman Trevor Gilley ran 8:22.06 in the 3,000 meters, which ranks him ninth in the school record books.
The 25th-ranked Ole Miss men also posted some strong results at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerqueon Saturday, as they wrapped up the final meet of the season before the SEC and NCAA Championships.
“We had some good performances this weekend,” O’Neal said. “We are looking forward to getting back to Oxford and having a couple weeks to train and get healthy as we get ready for the SEC Championships.”
Senior Mike Granger and freshman Jalen Miller led the way in the 60 meters. Granger, who is getting back to full health, clocked a season-best 6.67 (converted from 6.65 for altitude) to place third in the final, followed by Miller in fifth at 6.68. Granger moves to No. 21 on the NCAA indoor list this year.
The Rebels also had two milers run strong races in Albuquerque, as junior Daniel Bulmer placed third and freshman Robert Domanic sixth. Their altitude-converted times of 4:01.37 and 4:04.46 rank them second and fourth in school history, respectively.
Junior Robert Semien placed fifth in the final of the 60-meter hurdles in 7.86 (converted from 7.84).
Friday was highlighted by Sam Kendricks’ school record and No. 1 U.S. pole vault this year, as well as good showings by Malcolm Davis in the long jump and Onyi Afoaku and Nathan Loe in the weight throw.
As the SEC Championships approach (Feb. 27-March 1), the following Rebels are among the league’s best in their events: Miller and Granger in the 60m; Tobin, Bulmer and Domanic in the mile; Bulmer and Domanic in the 3000m; Semien in the 60mH; distance medley relay; Kendricks in the pole vault; Davis in the long jump; and Afoaku and Loe in the weight throw.
The highlight of the day for the Rebel women in Albuquerque was freshman Kennadi Bouyer in the 60 meters. She ran a personal-best 7.54 (converted from 7.52) to win the Section B final.
