Quartarone Posts Season High At Murray State

Senior Melissa Quartarone fired a season-high in air rifle Saturday and led the team in smallbore, but it was not enough as the No. 12 ranked Ole Miss rifle team dropped their match to No. 11 Murray State 4649-4610 here at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range.
“The team has to put themselves in a better position for a good team score in smallbore and they know that,” head coach Valerie Boothe said. “Our air rifle continues to be strong, we just couldn’t make up the difference today. We did have some great performances off of our bench, which is encouraging.”
The day began with the Racers taking a commanding lead after smallbore.   Quartarone shot a 574 to lead the Rebels, but the team total of 2264 was not enough to match MSU’s total of 2298.  The Racers boasted two shooters with a 576, one with 574 and the final counter with 572.
As has been the case most of the year, the Rebels have found a way to rebound in air rifle. Trailing by 34 points, the team knew would take something probably better than last weekend’s school-record score to overcome the deficit.
Quartarone fired a 592 in air, two off her career best, to pace Ole Miss to a 2346 total.  Of her 60 shots, Quartarone had one round of all 10s.  Freshman Alison Weisz posted a 590 for her fifth score in the 90s in the past seven matches.
Rena Goodwin turned in a 583, and Abbey Stanec finished with a 581 to round out the Rebels in air. Goodwin also posted a season-high 573 in smallbore, which did not count for the team score.
Murray State edged the Rebels in air by just five shots (2351), led by a 592 from Tessa Howald and a 590 from Katarina Besercic.
The Rebels will now return home to get ready for next weekend’s NCAA Qualifier in Lexington, Ky.
