Ole Miss has added impact big man M.J. Rhett to its basketball program, head coach Andy Kennedy announced Friday. Rhett will join the Rebels for the 2014-15 academic year.
A 6-foot-9 power forward, Rhett averaged 10.9 points per game, shot 54 percent from the field and 72 percent from the line for the Tennessee State Tigers last season. He ranked fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference, pulling down a team-high 9.1 boards a game, and led the OVC and ranked eighth in the nation with 14 double-doubles.
“We are excited to add M.J. to our team for next season,” said Kennedy. “He is the second post graduate student-athlete we have added and he, too, brings a history of  production at the D-1 level, having excelled in the OVC over the last three seasons. He is a long, athletic forward who has controlled the glass and scored in a variety of ways while at Tennessee State. We expect him to make an immediate impact along our front line.”
A redshirt junior, Rhett will graduate from Tennessee State with a degree in human performance and sports science in May and will have one season of eligibility for the Rebels.
Last year, the Columbia, S.C., native posted 16 points and 11 rebounds against Wichita State, 20 points and 10 boards versus Austin Peay and 10 points and a career-high 19 rebounds against Belmont.
A McDonald’s All-American nominee, Rhett averaged 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds a game as a senior at Low Richland High School en route to 3A first team all-state honors.
Rhett joins Roderick Lawrence and Terence Smith, who signed with the Rebels Wednesday, and J.T. Escobar, Marcanvis Hymon, Stefan Moody and Rauno Nurger, who all signed with Ole Miss in the fall.
