As the month of April came to a close, the No. 10 Ole Miss Rebel baseball team played host to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. The fans in attendance watched the Rebels drop a heartbreaker by the score of 7-6 to USM on a cold an overcast night in the last home non-conference game of the season.
Ole Miss (33-13) drove the ball to all parts of the park with 14 hits in the game.
It did not take long for fans to see the Rebels bats heat up on a chilly night. In the first inning Ole Miss scored three runs on four hits, all with two outs in the frame.
Ole Miss starter Evan Anderson worked a total of two innings allowing no runs and no hits. He also struck out three Southern Miss batters.
“It’s a big disappointment to lose tonight as we weren’t able to pitch enough to overcome a rally,” Bainco said.
In the bottom of the third, the Rebels added a run off of a sacrifice fly by Sikes Orvis.
Orvis discussed the tough loss after the game.
“We hit some balls really well, but we need to get some more runs when we have 14 hits,” Orvis said.
Orvis ended the night going two-for four with three RBI and scored one run.
Coach Mike Bianco called on the arms of Jacob Waguespack, Austin Blunt, Preston Tarkington, Scott Ashford, Cheyne Bickel, Hawtin Buchanan, Scott Weathersby, Josh Laxer and Wyatt Short in relief of Anderson.
The Golden Eagles scratched across two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Southern Miss junior catcher Austin Roussel hit a solo home run the fifth. Later in the frame, Matt Durst tied the game up at four with an RBI single.
Ole Miss retook the lead in the home half of the fifth on a RBI single by Orvis, which scored Anderson from third base.
Roussel drove an RBI double to right center to tie the game again at five runs a piece.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ole Miss started the frame off with back-to-back singles by Preston Overbey and Austin Knight. A few batters later, the Rebels plated Knight after two pitches that got past the catcher.
In the seventh, the Golden Eagles tied the game at six on a sacrifice fly.
Southern Miss took their first lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Nick Dawson.
