Ole Miss' Haynes Named SEC Freshman of the Week
After a huge performance in the No. 3 Rebels’ 34-3 win over Tennessee, Ole Miss defensive end Marquis Haynes has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.
Haynes, a native of Jacksonville, Florida, totaled a team-high 2.5 sacks in helping lead an Ole Miss defense that yet again did not allow a touchdown. It was the Rebels’ third game this year, and second in SEC play, to not surrender a touchdown.
Haynes also posted five tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a QB pressure against the Vols. This comes one week after being named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his two-sack effort at Texas A&M.
He leads the SEC in forced fumbles (3) and ranks third in sacks (6.5). He ranks top 10 nationally in both categories, including the second-most sacks by any freshman in the country.
The Ole Miss defense is earning a reputation as perhaps the nation’s best this season. The Rebels lead all FBS teams in scoring defense (10.6 points per game allowed) and are the only team in the nation that has yet to give up more than 20 points in a game.
