Rebel Men, Women Win Double Deep in Tad Pad Thursday
The Ole Miss Rebels had a sweep on the hardwood on Thursday night as the men and women both picked up wins.
The night started off with the Lady Rebels narrowly defeating in-state rival Southern Mississippi 68-66. Senior Tia Faleru scored 17 points in the win.
Ole Miss staked an early 8-4 lead after holding Southern Miss scoreless for a 4:32 stretch. The Golden Eagles battled back with runs of 9-2 and 6-0 to take a 23-18 lead with 6:34 left in the half, their largest lead of the game. The Rebels cut the lead to 30-29 going into halftime, as Faleru hit a layup with one second left on the clock.
“I’m really proud of our basketball team and how we responded. We had a lot of toughness and showed a lot of great things in that game,” coach Matt Insell said. “We can build on that. I’m really proud of our basketball team getting that win because we’re going to be happy to have that one come March.”
Coach Insell squad returns to the court on Saturday to take on Alabama A&M at noon Saturday.
The men followed, hosting Coastal Carolina and picking up a 71-68 win in.the final seconds of the game.
LaDarius “Snoop” White led the Rebels in scoring for the night with a career high 26 points. Coastal Carolina came out hot in the first half from behind the 3-point line, and as the two teams went into the dressing rooms, Ole Miss trailed 41-28.
In the second half, the Rebels looked to have shaken the first half jitters off with White draining a deep three early to get the momentum back up. Ole Miss worked their way back to take the lead 54-53.
In the last minute, the game got close once more as the Rebels allowed Coastal Carolina to score five unanswered points to draw within a point. Ole Miss was sent to the free throw line and closed the door on the night for the victory.
