End of All Music Celebrates Record Store Day April 18

The End of All Music will be joining the Record Story Day for the fourth year in a row on Saturday, April 18.

The Record Store Day is a worldwide event celebrated by independent record stores, labels and fans. David Swider, manager of The End of All Music, said, “It’s also a great excuse for us to throw a big party and thank all our customers for supporting us throughout the years.”

Opening the doors at 10 a.m. that Saturday the Oxonian records store will have its first ever vinyl release: Barry Hannah’s “I have no idea what tradition I’m in. Don’t care.” It is a spoken word recording featuring a guest lecture Barry Hannah gave to a small group of University of Mississippi students in William Ferris’ class on Southern literature. Barry Hannah was the writer-in-residence at University of Mississippi when Ferris had recently helped establish the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, and Ferris had recorded Hannah’s wisdom into the vinyl.

Swider said, “The record is an excellent example of what it was like to be in a classroom with Barry Hannah.”

A review from Jimmy Cajoleas at Nerve.com reads, “Less a formal lecture and more a bizarre kind of stand-up routine, the record is filled iwth non-sequiturs, jokes, poetry, and some of the brilliant verbal runs Barry is known for, all punctuated by Hannah’s wonderful smoker’s cackle, a remarkable effect in itself. At turns hilarious, baffling, and honest to a sometimes-uncomfortable degree, what comes through most is Hannah’s deep love of his friends, writing, and the ecstatic life.”

The record also has liner notes by William Ferris and Lisa Howorth, author of Flying Shoes, and will be available only at The End of All Music, retailing for $16.99. The leftovers after the Record Store Day on April 18 can be purchased online from April 20 on.

The vinyl record won’t be the only Barry Hannah-related feature that Saturday. His son, Po Hannah will be performing at the store wit his band High Water Railers featuring a lineup with Laurie Stirratt, Chris Michaels and Dave Hoffpauir. It will be short set that day but later on that night they’ll play a full set at Proud Larry’s where the official after-party of the Record Store Day is.

The after-party starts around 7 p.m., an hour after the store closes. The lineup there will be High Water Railers, Nervs and Plume and also a solo set from Cody Rogers of Holy Ghost Electric Show. The cover is $5.

The store will have custom t-shirts for the annual Record Store Day featuring the winning design by Lauren Dayan from the store’s t-shirt design contest. These shirts are limited but the design is unforgettable: the store underneath the spring’s star constellations. More of Lauren Dayan’s creative work can be seen at www.laurendayan.com.

It is safe to say that many Oxonians are celebrating Record Store Day with the End of All Music. Food and drinks are provided by Yalobusha Brewing Company, Home Place Pastures and High Point Coffee and also Confit Web Design and Oxford Brewing Company. High Point Coffee will be providing coffee all morning at a buck per cup with all profits donated to MusiCares.

Yalobusha Brewing Co. has made a special brew to coincide with the Barry Hannah record release. It is a single hop, black IPA called ‘Bats Out of Ale.’ Like the t-shirts and the vinyls the edition is limited, maybe more so, but free at the store and later at Proud Larry’s and also at the brewery’s tap room in Water Valley. The drinks will be great, but keep in mind that beer isn’t allowed out of the store that day, but the drinks may go great with pork sandwiches provided by Home Place Pastures of Como.

Don’t they sound delicious? Well they’re free! Come by and enjoy the good eats and music as Cole Furlow of Dead Gaze deejays in front of the store all afternoon.
