Lady Rebels Basketball Inks Cecilia Muhate Peña for 2015
The Ole Miss women’s basketball team added some international flavor when head coach Matt Insell announced the signing of Spaniard Cecilia Muhate Peña to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) during spring signing period.
Muhate Peña joins Victoria “Torri” Lewis (Olive Branch, Miss./Home School), Madinah Muhammad (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young HS) and Jonell Williams (Palatka, Fla./Palatka HS) as players who will suit up for Ole Miss in 2015-16.
“It’s always a great day to be an Ole Miss Rebel and it is even better when you add a new member to Rebel Nation like Cecilia,” said head coach Matt Insell. “Cecilia, who goes by Ceci, is considered one of the top forwards in Europe. I am thrilled to be able to welcome a player to our program with such a high level of international experience.”
Peña is a four-star international prospect from Madrid, Spain. She was a member of Spain’s U17 national team and a member of the team that came two points shy of knocking off the USA in the gold medal game at the 2014 FIBAS U17 World Championships last summer. In all of her FIBAS games, Peña is averaging 6.7 ppg and 8.8 rpg. Pena also lead the U16 national team to a gold medal at the 2013 European Championships.
“Cecilia is a very versatile athlete, who with her size, can play either forward position in our system,” said Insell. “When you sign a forward with a skill set that allows her to play multiple positions, you know that you have a special player and that’s what we have with Ceci. On top of her being a great basketball player, she is a even better student and person and I know she will represent Rebel Nation very well.”
Peña can score around the basket and stretch the defense with perimeter shooting. She is also a solid ball handler. She will join rising junior Shequila Joseph (London, England) as Ole Miss players with international experience and backgrounds.
The addition of Peña will likely increase Ole Miss’ initial ranking of its 2015-16 class. Prior to the signing of Peña, the three-member class of Lewis, Muhammad and Williams was ranked No. 34 nationally.
