Passion for Politics: Donald Trump’s Tax Plan Appeals to College Students

With the release of the Donald’s tax plan this week, college students across the country should be rejoicing. Here’s why.

If you earn $25,000 a year or less, you pay zero tax. If a married couple earns $50,000 a year or less, they pay zero tax. When did common sense ever surface like this before ? Trump calls for reducing the corporate income tax rate to 15 percent, which will clearly create jobs and start returning businesses from overseas.

He also intends to reduce the number of tax brackets from 7 to 4. I am suggesting that they go one step further and that in a student’s first year out of college, he or she would pay no tax whatsoever regardless of what they earn. In this manner, it provides breathing room to assist in paying off college debts and is an incentive for more young people to pursue a college degree.

Having spent 28 years in Economic Development worldwide, there are many incentives and programs that have proven successful through the years to spur the job economy. The states of Texas and Louisiana have some of the more proactive programs in the nation. Texas is in a league of its own when it comes to creating jobs. Here’s why.

Local communities can assess a 1 percent sales tax for Economic Development utilizing programs, which can double this to 2 percent via a local referendum. This then provides Economic Developers at a municipal level to have war chests of millions of dollars to entice companies to locate there. The three years I was in McKinney, Texas we recruited companies from Taiwan; The Netherlands; Italy; and all across the US utilizing these programs. It can work nationally as well. I have yet to hear any of our candidates for President discussing this other than Trump.

Returning to the fray, Dr. Carson continued to gain on the front runner and one national poll has him within 1 percentage point of Trump followed by Fiorina, Rubio and Jeb. It appears the rest of the field is going nowhere fast. Ironically about the above five candidates, three are from Florida. However, when you examine the polls in the three
early states of Iowa; New Hampshire and South Carolina, Trump has commanding leads. Should he win these three states, the party’s over.

Looking at the Democrats, Hillary’s problems intensified as the email-server problem just will not go away. Sanders continues to chip away at her lead although he now has a comfortable lead in New Hampshire while Vice President Biden is circling like a buzzard over a road kill. Most pundits believe Biden is waiting for the opportune time to pounce, which seems to be getting sooner than later.

In the end, it’s all about money as it always is. Trump has unlimited funds whereas the others are dependent upon donors. A Trump-Carson ticket would be a most unique nomination with two outsiders challenging the establishment. In a year when the absurd is true, don’t bet against it!
