Vassallo: What Christmas Means to Me – Mary’s Boy Child

Video on YouTube as posted by Frank Farian Fan Club

This is a second story in the theme what Christmas means to me. In 1978 the group Boney M. recorded one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time…Mary’s Boy Child/ Oh My Lord which topped the charts in the UK.

The song has had just under 5 million views on You Tube. If this song cannot get you into the Christmas spirit, nothing will.

Rosie and I were asked to attend a church service Sunday at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Oxford where the Daraja Children’s Choir from Kenya was singing. The group is in the midst of a six-month U.S. tour. Their second selection Sunday was Mary’s Boy Child which inspired me to share the joy about this wonderful song.

The lyrics are as special as the melody. The song was written in 1956 by Jester Hairston. Here’s a brief preview:

“Long time ago in Bethlehem
So the Holy Bible say
Mary’s Boy child, Jesus Christ
Was born on Christmas Day.

Hark now hear the angels sing
A king was born today
And man will live for evermore
Because of Christmas Day.”

I could listen to this song every day (year round) and never tire of hearing it. Taking the words to heart, this describes the greatest Christmas gift ever given to the world… the blessings and love of Jesus Christ.

Christmas, occasionally, is a sad time for some due to whatever reason, but it should not ever be. You only have to think about this ultimate gift that is waiting for all of us believers at the end of the race. When we do, the problems/disappointments of today and yesteryear seem microscopic in proportion. Mary’s Boy Child solved them all for all of us long before we were even born!
