Our beautiful town, Oxford, Mississippi, is competing for Southern publication, Garden & Gun, to declare it the Best Southern College Town in its “version of NCAA March Madness” and y’all can help Oxford win!

As of 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, Oxford has 74 percent of the vote over Bowling Green, Kentucky where Ross Bjork was the athletics director for Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers. Well, Bjork’s past didn’t stop him from calling on everyone last Thursday to vote for his current residence: Oxford!

Oxford has four more rounds to go through before earning the title. Garden & Gun selected 32 Southern college towns and divided them in four competing regions:

  • Mid South: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee
  • West South: Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas
  • Mid Atlantic: Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia
  • South Atlantic: Florida, Georgia and South Carolina

On its website, Garden & Gun said: “And while we couldn’t possibly include them all, the mix includes towns that are home to big football dynasties, tight-knit academic communities, and even military and art schools. To help level the playing field, we kept it to towns with populations under 315,000 (so no bigger cities such as Austin, Nashville, and Atlanta). All told, seventeen states are represented, and as always, the winner is up to you.”

Oxonians and those who love Oxford can vote once a day until Round One ends at 10:59 (CT) on March 20. Garden & Gun will announce Round Two on Monday, March 21. Round Three will be on March 25 to 28 and the Final Four on March 29 to 31. The Championship is on April 1 to 3.

Let’s get the vote out! We’ve only four days for Oxford to beat Bowling Green!
