The speaking and knowledge to be gained are free and the food is free as well. Lunch will be provided to all attendees courtesy of sponsors Renasant Bank, Evans Petree Attorneys at Law and White Construction at the Courtside Club in the Pavilion at a reception that begins at 11:30 a.m. Students, faculty, staff, administrators, Oxford/Lafayette community leaders and citizens interested in a conversation about growth in Oxford are invited.

Kotkin, an internationally recognized author and urban development expert will address the changing economic, political, and social trends in growing communities like Oxford, as well as how to deal with these changes in a smart and resourceful manner.

Jon Maynard, the President and CEO of the Oxford-Lafayette County Economic Development Foundation and Chamber of Commerce, said, “Oxford is a rapidly growing community.  We are growing because of a fondness for the quality of life, the culture that we represent and the ambiance of our surroundings.  As we grow, we face a potentially negative impact on what makes us great. We have a choice in how we grow. We can either let change affect us, or we can affect the change.  By leading the growth we can control the direction of change.  Having someone with Joel Kotkin’s credentials speak to that growth in Oxford is both timely and fortuitous.  The message that we hope to hear is that growth can be accomplished without negative impact.”

Said Lucius Brock, Manager of Renasant Bank of Oxford, one of the event’s major sponsors, “I heard about this great event through Blake Tartt, who is a big supporter of mine, our Bank, and the LOU Community.  I think this is a wonderful opportunity for a mind such as Joel’s to offer up some invaluable insight as to how we prudently manage the exponential growth we are experiencing here in Oxford, most notably in our real estate markets.”

The world-class event will be a joint-effort of the Business School and the Athletic Department of Ole Miss, along with the Meek School of Journalism and New Media. It would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors like Evans Petree, a full-service law firm in Memphis, Renasant Bank of the Mid-South, and Ole Miss alumnus brothers Neel and Guy White of White Construction, loyal supporters of the Ole Miss Real Estate program.

Said Paul Edwards, an attorney at Evans Petree, “Evans Petree is very excited about the speech Mr. Kotkin is going to give as it is very timely and topical for both Oxford and Ole Miss. I am a graduate of Ole Miss, will have two of my step-children attending Ole Miss next year, and my wife and I are actually moving to Oxford later this month, along with another one of our attorneys and her family. Oxford and Ole Miss are both undergoing tremendous growth, and we are very interested in how to continue the growth while retaining the charm and culture that is so attractive and unique to both.”

The talk will begin at the Pavilion following the Courtside Club lunch reception that begins at 11:30 a.m.
