Do-Nut Worry, Be Happy! Today is National Doughnut Day.

Doughnuts Do Good

National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser by The Salvation Army in Chicago during the Great Depression. The day is designed to honor military veterans and Salvation Army volunteers.

During World War I, Salvation Army volunteers made doughnuts to comfort American soldiers in France and Germany. Female volunteers nicknamed, “Doughnut girls,” fried the dough in soldier’s helmets. Today, Salvation Army continues this comforting tradition by providing doughnuts and coffee to survivors and emergency responders of disaster.

This year is the 79th Annual National Doughnut Day. It’s celebrated the first Friday of every June.

Celebrate at Shipley’s!

Shipley’s Do-Nuts is the only doughnut store in Oxford.

Rhonda Malone started working at the Doughnut shop two weeks ago.

She said, “I didn’t know that everybody liked doughnuts like they do. I used to work at KFC, they love doughnuts more than they love chicken.”

Locals favorites are the blueberry cake and plain glazed doughnuts. The shop is open from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
