Top Headlines: Oxford’s Down Syndrome Support Group Organizes Summer Family Camp

A summer camp has been organized this year for Down syndrome families at Camp Hopewell in Oxford. Sponsored by 21 United of Mississippi, this camp is for individuals with Down syndrome and their immediate family members.

“This camp will allow Down syndrome children and their typically-developing siblings to enjoy all a summer camp has to offer,” said Jenny Rayner, president of 21 United. “As far as the children are concerned, there is no focus on Down syndrome. They will have the opportunity to do camp activities together and just be kids.”

The camp will also offer parents networking, fellowship and education opportunities. Though parents will participate in some activities with their children, there are times carved out for education. Some sessions will feature speakers who are experts in their fields while other sessions are group discussions geared toward specific topics common to families directly affected by Down syndrome.

“For the past two years, 21 United has organized successful Buddy Walk events that allowed us to raise money for our organization,” said Rayner. “This wonderful opportunity is made possible by the support given to that October event.”

Created by three Oxford families, 21 United of Mississippi is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the inclusion, value and acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome.
