Top Headlines: Former MSU Student Sentenced to 12 Years for Plotting to Join ISIS
OXFORD, Miss – A Mississippi woman is going to prison after pleading guilty to charges that she tried to join Islamic State.
U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock sentenced Jaelyn Young to 12 years in prison on a terrorism charge in Oxford. The 20-year-old from Vicksburg was arrested last August along with her boyfriend Muhammad Dakhlalla [[ dock-LA-la ]]. Prosecutors say the two disguised their plot to join ISIS as honeymoon plans to Syria.
“I found the contacts, made arrangements, planned the departure,” Young wrote in a letter to her family. “I am guilty of what you soon will find out.”
Both are former Mississippi State University students. Young is also a former high school cheerleader.
Prosecutors wrote, “Young continually asked Dakhlalla when they were going to join (the Islamic State group) and began to express hatred for the U.S. government and to express support for the implementation of Sharia law in the United States.”
Dakhlalla also pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing Aug. 24.
