Two Nuns Found Stabbed to Death in Rural Mississippi

Published

on

Just south of Oxford, Mississippi about 45 minutes two Catholic nuns who work with the poor were stabbed to death in their rural Durant home.

The two nuns were found dead Thursday morning after a co-worker went to check on them when they didn’t show up for work at the Lexington Medical Clinic they operate in Lexington.

Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard identified the nuns as Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, who were nurse practitioners. The nuns were part of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

The clinic treats patients regardless of their ability to pay in one of the poorest communities in Mississippi. In 2014, the clinic provided nearly 8,000 patient visits.

Police are treating it as a robbery that escalated to murder.  So far, no arrests have been made.
