The Pros and Cons of Wintersession at Ole Miss

Published

on

topstoryhottytoddyIt’s the first day of Wintersession. You are happy to finally be back in Oxford, but it’s starting to sink in that you have to sit in on a four-hour lecture every day, and those four hours start to feel like an eternity. But, trust me, it’s all worth it. So every time you think of one of these cons to Wintersession remind yourself of a pro.

Pro: Easy A
Wintersession is a perfect time to boost your GPA from last semester. Ask around and find an easy A class to fix that gap asap so you and your parents can have some peace of mind from those final grades that just came in the mail from fall semester.
Con: Shorter Christmas Break
Yeah, it sucks starting back to school two days after New Years.. like you’re in high school all over again. But all your friends from home are going to be heading back to their college towns soon, so don’t fret.
Pro: The Square
Any upperclassman will tell you the best time of the year to be in Oxford is for intersession classes. The bars usually don’t have covers, the restaurants aren’t packed, and all your favorite stores have incredible deals going on; therefore, you can actually enjoy the Square like never before. The students who like to have a good time and were getting bored in their hometowns can now have some fun.
Con: Four Hour Classes
A four-hour lecture, day after day, starts to feel like torture… to the point where you cringe when you’re out of the classroom and the word “class” even crosses your mind.
Editor’s note: Take advantage of the breaks, get up and walk around. Bring a snack that will give you energy that last hour-and-a-half.
Pro: The Tests Are Easier
Because you have less time to cover material, the professor usually gives shorter and easier tests.
Editor’s note: Some professors even give open note tests during intersession, so figure out which professor does and sign up for that class, and pray it’s not full!
Con: No Syllabus Day
There is absolutely no worse feeling on the first day of classes when you’re at the end of going over the syllabus and your teacher flips to the next slide that says “Chapter 1.”
Pro: Three-Hour Credit In Two Weeks
This is also a good time to take a class that you know will need your full undivided attention, one that you wouldn’t be able to devote time to when you’re taking a full load of classes.
Editor’s note: Take that class you have been putting off like Accy 202 or Math 267
Con: No Absences
The professors do not play around when it comes to absences during intersession classes. At most, you might be allowed one day, but if you dare to miss two days, you’ll get a big fat F.
Pro: Parking
It’s like a dream come true. You can pretty much park anywhere. No more fighting other students for spots, no more leaving for your class 30 minutes early, and no more walking from one side of campus to the other to get to your class.
