SEC Commissioner Recuses Himself From NCAA’s Case Against Ole Miss

As we are all aware, the NCAA’s investigation into the Ole Miss Football program is far from over. While the investigation has concluded, it is now Ole Miss’ turn to respond to the NCAA’s findings, and head coach Hugh Freeze and AD Ross Bjork will eventually get their chance to defend themselves in front of the Committee of Infractions (COI).
Greg Sankey, commissioner of the SEC, happens to be a member of the COI, but stated earlier today that he has recused himself from any investigations regarding teams from the SEC.
“I’m fully recused of anything involving SEC institutions,” Sankey said during the Associated Press Sports Editors’ Southeast Region meeting.
The use of immunity for players to speak with NCAA officials has become a controversial tactic throughout the investigation into the Rebel program, and Sankey suggested he had no part in the decision to grant the immunity and hasn’t talked to anyone on the committee about the case.
The Ole Miss Football program is currently facing 21 allegations including a lack of institutional control, one of the allegations Ole Miss will work to contend in front of the COI.
Sankey also made headlines earlier this week after announcing that he would not recuse himself from the NCAA’s academic fraud investigation into the University of North Carolina.
