Ole Miss Soccer Season Preview: Goalkeepers
With the start of the regular season just 11 days away, Ole Miss soccer continues its preseason work in preparation for the home opener next Friday, Aug. 18.
While the Rebels continue training sessions on the field, OleMissSports.com will take a look at and break down each position group heading into the 2017 campaign.
Monday’s preview features the goalkeepers, where redshirt junior Marnie Merritt, and sophomore Claire Williams return to the pitch. Merritt, a native of Huntersville, N.C., is back for her third-straight season as the starter with her name already scattered throughout the record books.
Merritt ranks sixth in career goals against average (1.36), saves (163), wins (23) and shutouts (11). Last season, she and the backline turned in four shutouts and she earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors week one.
“We’re excited Marnie Merritt is back for her redshirt junior year,” head coach Matthew Mott said. “She looks great and has come into camp really fit and ready to dominate her position for us. We’re going to lean on her for her leadership and ability in the back, and I think she’s poised for a great year.”
Behind her, Claire Williams has a year of training under her belt and ready to provide depth for the Rebels.
“Claire has come in looking sharp as well and is kicking the ball better,” Mott added. “She does a great job in her role, and we feel very confident in her abilities to continue to improve.”
