Great Moments in Egg Bowl History: A Last-Minute Comeback Thriller

John Fourcade Ole Miss
Ole Miss QB John Fourcade went on to play in the CFL, the USFL and, for a brief time during a players’ strike, the New Orleans Saints in the NFL.

The 1981 Egg Bowl was a comeback thriller for Rebel fans and a heartbreaker for the Bulldogs.
In this game, played on neutral territory in Jackson, Ole Miss trailed the Bulldogs 17-14 with only 13 seconds left on the game clock. The Rebels had a first and ten from the Mississippi State 25 yard line. Quarterback John Fourcade attempted a pass to Mike Harmon in the end zone, and the ball appeared to be picked off for an interception that would have sealed the win for MSU. But a flag on the play quickly halted the Bulldogs’ celebration, and the referee called pass interference on the MSU defender.
The penalty moved the ball just off the doorstep of the goal line for Ole Miss.
With time running out, Ole Miss Head Coach Steve Sloan elected to take a risk, foregoing a tying field goal and sending the offense back out on the field for one last play to win the game.
Fourcade took the snap, cut to the right and dashed into the end zone untouched, securing a 21-17 win in regulation.
