After his record-breaking performance in Thursday night’s Egg Bowl, some fans are calling Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown “the mayor of Starkville.” And like any good politician, Brown cares about his constituents, which is why he tweeted out kind words to Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald this morning.
Fitzgerald left the game early in the first quarter with a brutal ankle injury. He underwent surgery on Friday, and the Clarion-Ledger reports he “may be healthy in time for spring football practice.”
Brown, who turned in a star-making performance before a national TV audience and set a new Ole Miss record for single-season receiving yards (1,252), is a Starkville native. He amused Rebel fans – and doubtlessly infuriated the Bulldog crowd – when he shouted, “My city! My city!” after scoring on a 77-yard pass play that put Ole Miss ahead 17-6.
But, despite the intensity of the game, Brown also expressed his concern and best wishes for Fitzgerald the next morning on Twitter:
Prior to the Egg Bowl, Fitzgerald led the SEC in rushing yards by a quarterback (968) and had thrown for 1,770 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
