Out of the public eye, William Faulkner loved to sail his 19-foot sailboat, The Ring Dove, at Sardis Reservoir near Oxford.
He bought the boat from Author Guyton for $300 and took it home to Rowan Oak, where he spent weeks scraping, caulking, painting and fitting it for launching.
Eudora Welty went sailing with him one time according to an article in the Paris Review:
John Cofield is a HottyToddy.com writer and one of Oxford’s leading folk historians. He is the son of renowned university photographer, Jack Cofield. His grandfather, J.R. “Colonel” Cofield, was William Faulkner’s personal photographer and for decades was the Ole Miss yearbook photographer. Cofield attended Ole Miss as well.
