Memorial Day in Oxford

Dozens gathered for Memorial Day services in the community and on campus to remember those who fought and died for our country.
Members of the American Legion Post 55, Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V) and Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.) Post 3978 led a ceremony at the Oxford Conference Center and the American Legion Boys State performed roll call in the Grove.
“Memorial Day is about remembrance,” said Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill. “I’m humbled to honor those who have served. In the end my soldier came home. But some military spouses aren’t so lucky and today I remember them.”
Dozens bowed as Randy Hope, minister at Abbeville Baptist Church, opened the ceremony at the conference center. Members of the Oxford Police Dept. gathered in formal regalia as they posted and retired our nation’s flag during the ceremony. Guest speaker and former Ole Miss graduate Col. Ed Gregory, Marines (Ret.) spoke about those who we should recognize on Memorial Day.
“We honor the men who pressed on as those who around them who fell,” Gregory said.
