The Oxford Chargers play host to the Lafayette Commodores Friday night in the annual Crosstown Classic. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bobby Holcomb Field.

“This rivalry is a lot of fun for both communities,” Oxford head coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “I think a lot of people will come out Friday night, and it will be a great atmosphere for both schools to get behind.”

Oxford (1-1) picked up its first win of the season last Friday as they defeated Grenada 39-0. Cutcliffe’s team scored all their points in the second (15) and third (24) quarters of the game.

“We can continue to improve week-in and week-out with a great week of practice,” Cutcliffe said. “This week’s challenge is to do it again. We definitely made some improvements from the Starkville game to the Grenada game. Now the challenge is to do it again.”

Lafayette travels across University Avenue to put an unblemished record on the line when they face the Chargers. The Commodores defeated North Panola 33-14 last weekend with more than 400 yards rushing in the game. Senior Jamie Shaw Jr. carried the ball 17 times for 120 yards. His teammate, RB Lance Stewart, rushed for 160 yards on 11 touches.

“The (Commodores) have ten senior starters returning on defense,” Cutcliffe said. “They are very experienced on both sides of the ball. They have some very good backs and a really talented quarterback. We are playing against a veteran team.”
