Mississippi Community Takes to Social Media for Goodbyes to Sheriff East

Since the death of Sheriff F.D. “Buddy” East Saturday, citizens, friends and government officials from around Oxford and Mississippi took to social media to say goodbyes and share memories of the state’s longest-serving sheriff.

East, 76, died at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.

Before being appointed as sheriff in 1972, East served as the assistant to the Chief of Police for the Oxford Police Department.

The funeral service for East will be Friday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. at North Oxford Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Bain and Fish Robinson officiating.  Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.
