Construction of Parking Garage Back On

The construction of the downtown parking garage is set to begin Monday – again.

Earlier this month, the Oxford Board of Aldermen rescinded a bid from Shaw Services of Holly Springs, that won the bid to do the site work and excavation for the garage, which is the first step toward its construction.

The contractor failed to secure its performance bond.

The fence around the site where the garage is to be built, behind the Oxford Square North shopping center, was taken down and the parking lot was opened back up.

However, on Tuesday, after Shaw Services announced it was able to secure the payment and performance bond, the aldermen reinstated the contractor and voted to move forward with the construction of the garage.

The construction will resume Monday with the installation of the construction fence. Installation of temporary shoring will begin on Wednesday and demolition of the existing parking lot will begin Thursday.

The construction of the garage is expected to take about 12 months. City and parking officials have worked with nearby landowners to provide additional free parking during the construction period.

Once completed, the garage will be a three-story, four-level parking structure that will provide about 401 spaces with an additional 90 surface parking spaces around the garage.
