Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith will officially step into office as Mississippi’s newest candidate to the U.S. Senate.
The Associated Press tweeted at approximately 9:24 p.m. that Hyde-Smith was declared the winner of the Senate runoff election over her Democrat opponent and former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Espy.
At the time of the call, Hyde-Smith had received approximately 55.2 percent of the states vote while Espy had received approximately 44.8 percent with 1,415 precincts reporting out of 1,797.
The state’s vote marks a political historic event as Mississippi elects its first female senator to U.S. Senate office.
