Oxford was dubbed the best high school sports town in Mississippi by Maxpreps.com—a source for high school sports.
The website noted that the city of Oxford has dominated in high school athletics thanks to Oxford and Lafayette school districts accomplishing several feats in respective sporting arenas.
“Oxford’s football and baseball teams have been among the best in the nation in recent years, while the Lafayette girl’s soccer and volleyball teams have been among the state’s best this year,” the website stated.
Recently, the Commodore girl’s soccer team won the 2019 Mississippi State title. The school’s bowling team also found success winning its first MHSAA bowling championship
Oxford’s baseball team has been one of the many athletic teams for the district to rise to the top. In 2018 the team finished with an overall record of 23-11 and another top 5 overall ranking in the state after bowing out of the playoffs in the North Half Championship series to eventual state champion Desoto Central.
The OHS Cheerleading time recently found success, yet again, as it displayed a routine at the MHSAA State Championship. The squad nabbed the 1st place spot for their “game-day routine” this past December.
In addition to the OHS cheerleaders winning their state title, the Chargerettes dance team managed to clinch a fourth-place title at the dance competition. The dance won 18th place at the NDA National Championship in February.
