Now that Mardi Gras beads have fallen and all the king cake has been consumed, the next holiday, St. Patrick’s Day, is in sights.
Along with green beer and an appreciation of all things Irish, LOU residents are encouraged to attend the 10th annual Oxford St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl set for March 16. There are currently eight Square restaurants and bars listed on the route for the pub crawl. The crawl begins at 3 p.m. at Harrison’s and will travel to Moe’s Original Bar B Que, Proud Larry’s, Roundtable, The Library, Funky’s, Rooster’s and finish at The Blind Pig.
Pub Crawl organizer Joe Dickey said he started the event in 2009 with just a few people.
“We met more people (along the pub crawl route) than what we started out with,” he said.
This year he anticipates more than 500 fellow pub crawlers from Wisconsin, Iowa and Georgia with the majority being from the LOU area.
“The first year we started there wasn’t anything going on for St. Patrick’s Day,” Dickey said. “We thought Oxford ought to have something like this.”
Dickey said his mission in creating and facilitating the pub crawl is to invite people to have a good time. Previously they have raised money for Volunteers for Veterans but he clarified this is not a charity event.
“We want people in the pub crawl to get to know other people in Oxford they might not meet,” he said.
This year’s event will feature a costume contest. Judges have been selected to choose one man and one woman wearing the best St, Patrick’s Day costumes.
There is no cost for the event. Along the route, Dickey said there will be free swag and drink specials.
