The 2019 Oxford Regional final matchup is set. The No. 4 seed Jacksonville State defeated No. 3 seed Clemson 9-2, which means the Gamecocks play Ole Miss tonight at 8 p.m.
Jacksonville State (39-22) made it through the elimination portion of the NCAA Oxford Regional to the championship game.
They jumped out to an early lead against the Tigers in the second inning after a home run off the bat of Tre Kirklin. The Gamecocks plated four runs in the frame.
Clemson (35-26) quickly responded with two of their own in the bottom of the frame, as Kyle Wilkie got the Tigers on the board with a solo home run down the right field line for the first run. The second run was in the form of Bryar Hawkins who doubled to right center and came home on a single off the barrel of Bryce Teodosio a few batters later.
The Gamecocks extended the lead in the fifth by two runs with back-to-back base knocks by Cole Frederick and Alex Webb. Frederick scored on a fielder’s choice, then later in the inning Webb crossed the plate on an RBI walk.
Jacksonville State found their way to the Regional final by defeating the No. 2 seed Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday in the first elimination, 7-5.
Ole Miss will take the diamond against the Gamecocks for the second time in the Regional. On Friday, the Rebels defeated JSU 16-2.
Prior to the loss to the Rebels, Jacksonville State was riding a 12-game winning streak, including a win over SEC foe Georgia. For the second consecutive year, an Ohio Valley Conference team will be taking on the Rebels.
The first pitch of the 2019 Oxford Regional Championship between No. 4 Jacksonville State and the No. 1 seed Ole Miss will be at 8 p.m.
