MHP Reports 7 Fatalities Over Labor Day Weekend; None in Lafayette

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reported seven fatalities on state and federal highways and interstates over the Labor Day weekend.

No fatal wrecks were reported in Lafayette County; however, there was one fatal wreck in Marshall County.

The enforcement period started at midnight on Friday and ended at midnight on Monday.

Throughout the period MHP issued 9,426 citations, which included 184 DUI arrests, 519 seatbelt citations and 110 child restraint citations. Troopers investigated 121 crashes that resulted in 47 people being injured and seven fatalities.

In 2019, there were three fatalities during the holiday weekend across the state and 131 total crashes.

“We are disappointed in the increase of fatalities during this Labor Day period compared to the 2019 period,” said Col. Randy Ginn, director of MHP. “These statistics remind us that we have to continue to educate the public on how speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and impaired and distracted driving play a huge role in traffic fatalities.”

The fatal wreck in Marshall County occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Monday on I-22.

A sport utility vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-22 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle overturned several times ejecting the driver. The driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene.

In Troop E specifically, troopers investigated 12 wrecks with one fatality and issued 1,654 citations that included 44 DUIs – the highest number of DUI arrests in one district in the state. They issued 108 seat belt tickets and made two drug/felony arrests.
