Blake Purchase sees no weak link in Ole Miss defensive front

If you want to understand how Ole Miss built its defense this offseason, you don’t need a depth chart or a roster breakdown. You just need to listen to Blake Purchase talk about the defensive front. He doesn’t hedge. He doesn’t soften it. He doesn’t try to be polite. He thinks the group is deep, talented and ready to be one of the strengths of the team.

“We have a deep defensive line,” Purchase said. “You can probably go from top to bottom. From top to bottom, the defensive front is going to be good.”

That’s coming from someone who sees the rotation every day, practices against SEC tackles every day and knows exactly what Ole Miss has up front.

And if you want the clearest example of that depth, look at the Jack room.

“In the Jack room alone, you have me, Jonathan, Suntarine and a lot of other guys,” Purchase said. “We have a deep room.”

That’s the part that jumps out. The Jacks aren’t just edge rushers. In Pete Golding’s defense, they’re chess pieces. They set edges. They drop. They rush. They move. They create mismatches. And Ole Miss has multiple players who can do all of that without the staff having to worry about a drop‑off.

Purchase fits right into that identity. He came to Ole Miss with speed off the edge and a natural pass‑rush feel, but he spent the offseason working on the parts of his game that make a Jack truly valuable.

He attacked run defense. He focused on physicality. He studied formations and alignments so he could anticipate plays before they happen.

“You see certain alignments and start recognizing what that might mean,” he said. “It’s about knowing those little things and almost being able to play the play before it comes.”

That’s how you build a deep front. Not just with bodies, but with players who can handle multiple roles and understand the game at a higher level.

And Purchase isn’t the only one. Jonathan Maldonado has taken a step. Suntarine Perkins can line up anywhere. The interior rotation is strong. The defensive ends are strong. The Jacks are strong. It’s the kind of depth that lets Golding mix and match without worrying about who’s on the field.

Purchase sees it every day. He feels it every day. He practices against Terez and Tommy Kinsler and the rest of the offensive tackles, and he says those battles are making him better. That’s how you know the depth is real. When the competition is that good, you don’t have to manufacture confidence.

“Going against them every day is making me tremendously better,” Purchase said.

That’s the story of Ole Miss’ defensive front right now. It’s a room full of players who can rotate, attack, and stay fresh deep into games.

Purchase is excited to show it off because he knows what Ole Miss has up front.

From top to bottom, he thinks it’s good.

And if the Jack room is any indication, he might be right.
